"World Cup" should be one of the main Newsvine tags

You know you want it.

Hey, I think "World Cup" should be one of the main Newsvine tags. It's only going to be until July 9th, so I don't think it will bug our non-footballfans that much.

Yes yes, you may want to say, "maybe you should get your fix on SoccerNet.com or WorldCup.com" but hey, we football fans still want to stop by here at least a little bit, we're not going to desert and exile Newsvine for a whole month! :P

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Yes, we need a World Cup as a main tag on the Newsvine homepage, it's only for a month anyway!

No, we do not need a World Cup as a main tag on the Newsvine homepage.

Why not add "world cup" to your watchlist?

This is what I've been doing. Not all the world cup articles are under that title so once in awhile there's something that shows up in sports that isn't in my watchlist. Yesterday one article had wcup instead of World Cup as a tag.

Doesn't bother me much to have to dig a tiny bit. So long as they're all under one tag, a watch list will be fine.

The main newsvine tags are more general, so definately not there. And the Top Tags are dynamically generated, so if you post some articles tagged "world-cup" that get some votes, you might get a top tag for a day or two.

Like Cory said, it would just be easier to watch "world-cup", "cup", "wcup", etc.

I don't know about having a main tag (it could slippery slope into all kinds of strange temporary tags). What I would like to see is a specific place to discuss the pick 'em tournament. I am trying to learn a bit more about this whole phenomenan by participating but there is a lot I don't understand. Something like the MLB scoreboard would be cool

At least I did better at picking this time than I did in the NCAA picks. I am getting smarter, one pick at a time.

I too agree there should be a comment are for the Pick 'Em. One attached to each group would be great.

Assuming most Newsviners are Americans, I think there is just a lack of interest for the world cup. Maybe I am wrong but Americans are more interested in football and other sports than soccer.

can someone explain scoring to me?

I understand that if you get the ball past the goalie into the net, you get a point.

How does this translate into points on the Tournament Pick'em?

Here's my guess -- I get the points for a win plus points for the number of goals my team scored and the other team gets a point for each of their goals?

Another question -- on the FIFA website -- it shows the actual score and then another score-looking thing in paranthesis after it. What is this second set of numbers?

Thanks for helping me get smarter. :)

You are correct regarding scoring on newsvine. You also get a point for a tie. For example, when Sweden and Trinidad & Tobago played to a scoreless tie, each team got one point. If it was a 1-1 tie, each team would have gotten two points, one for the tie and one for the goal.

World Cup scoring is three points for a win and one pint for a tie. You need to be in the top two in your group after the round-robin to advance to the single elimination part of the tournament. If teams are tied in points, goal *differential* comes into play. In World Cup scoring the aforementioned game would have resulted in a scoring of one point for each team in the standings regardless of the tie score.

On the FIFA website, the score in parentheses is the score at halftime.
